Miyah Poetry by Shalim Hussain at Migration Museum
Our Migration Museum hosted a special Miyah poetry performance by Shalim M Hussain.
Miyah poetry is a literary movement of protest poetry initiated by Assamese Muslims of Bengali origin against the marginalisation of their community. Although the word 'Miyah' literally means gentleman in Urdu, Hussain learned at a young age that in his home state of Assam, 'Miyah' is a slur meaning "Bangladeshi" or "illegal immigrant" and it is these notions that his poetry challenges.
Shalim is a writer, translator and researcher and is at the forefront of this new wave of Miyah poetry.
