Venkatesh Hariharan (Venky) is the Director of Knowledge Commons, a non-profit that works on open access to knowledge. Before entering the non-profit world, he was the Head of Public Policy at Google India, the Corporate Affairs Director at Red Hat and the Executive Editor of Express Computer. Venky was the first Indian to be selected for the prestigious Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT. He is interested in the intersection of technology, policy and society. Over the last few years, Open Source has emerged as a powerful model for creating and disseminating knowledge.

In his Friday Funda talk, Venky shared his take on how open source software like Linux and Apache, open source encyclopaedias like Wikipedia and drug discovery efforts like India's own Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) prove that it is possible for geographically distributed groups of people to
collaborate over the Internet and create complex bodies of knowledge.
