The Godrej India Culture Lab is proud to collaborate with the exhibition Across Oceans and Flowing Silks: From Canton to Bombay 18th to 20th Centuries that is being held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, and with the National Film Development Corporation of India, hosted a special screening of the film Gangoobai.

Gangoobai is a film about a Maid-in-Matheran who has lived a life with simple aspirations, until one day she finds a new purpose of buying an extremely expensive Gara sari. She follows her dream to the big city of Mumbai and changes the lives of the people she interacts with.

At the screening, we also had a very special conversation between Priya Krishnaswamy, the director of the film and Zenobia Davar, Mumbai’s “Gara lady”. Zenobia Davar runs her label ZS which creates authentic hand embroidered Gara sarees and bridalwear. She provided the Garas that are seen in Gangoobai!
