Dr. Payton MacDonald - Dhrupad Fusion
At this Friday Funda held on 28th March 2014, accomplished composer/singer/improviser/percussionist/educator and currently a Fulbright Nehru Research scholar, Payton MacDonald delivered a lecture demonstration on the unique style of Dhrupad fusion. In an outstanding demonstration of his vocal prowess, he rendered a composition or bandish of a Kabir poetry in English. Referring to it as a performance of 'artificial raga', Payton took quite a radical approach by using two differently scaled electronic tanpuras. He explained the role of iconic musicians instrumental in spreading Indian music in America, namely Hazrat Inayat Khan, Uday Shankar, Pandit Pran Nath, Pandit Sharda Sahai and touched upon the works of Western musicians like John Cage, Terry Riley, Michael Harrison, Shawn Mativetsky and Reena Esmail who have greatly contributed to the genre of classical fusion.
