Urdu Culture Now

8 June 2018 05:30PM

We hosted Urdu Culture Now an event curated by the first batch of Godrej India Culture Lab Leadership Programme fellows - seven students from humanities colleges across Mumbai who are spending the summer at the Culture Lab.

We hosted a spectacular jashn of contemporary Urdu culture. India is a multilingual land and yet the vibrance and beauty of the Urdu language is being systemically invisibilised from the cultural milieu of the country. 'Urdu Culture Now' explored the state of Urdu culture in Mumbai and showcased its multiple intersections with modernity, digital and urban India. The evening included:

Panel Discussion - Urdu Revival Through the Internet
It featured lyricist and poet Hussain Haidry, artist Zeenat Kulavoor and Mahtab Alam, Executive Editor of The Wire Urdu. Writer and journalist Annie Zaidi moderated this discussion.

Art Exhibits
Works by Zeenat Kulavoor and Nasheet Shadani, and a Sound Zone with specially curated playlists.

Performances
Actor and storyteller Danish Husain will take centre stage with a Quissebaazi performance and Winit Tikoo will perform a set of Urdu rock tunes.

Pop-up bookstore
